Alfred Mond, 1st Baron Melchett, was born in Lancashire in 1868, to parents of German-Jewish origins.

He was a financier and politician, becoming MP for Chester in 1906, and Minister of Health in 1921. Mond was raised to the peerage in 1928, becoming Baron Melchet. He also founded the town of Tel Mond in 1929, now in Israel.
