Description
A link to Jewish life can be found on HMS Victory in Moses Benjamin.
Benjamin had been selling jewellery in the East End of London in the early 19th century, when he was forcibly ‘impressed’ into service (meaning he was physically coerced or intimidated) aboard Victory, aged just 19. The admiralty conceded that as he was Jewish, he was deemed a ‘foreigner’ and not permitted to be pressed, and gave the order for Benjamin to be discharged. Unfortunately, the order may have come come too late, and the Victory may have already set sail.

However, Benjamin is believed to have left the ship before the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, and had a son who became a trader in London.
