Description
Barnard has been called "the greatest all-round sportsman the city of Portsmouth has ever produced".
Born in Portsmouth in 1933, Barnard was descended from the Rabbi Daniel Barnard, who came to England from Prague in 1782. In his life, he played both professional cricket and football for various Hampshire teams.

He joined Portsmouth Football Club at the age of 18, where he soon became a star player, playing 123 matches and scoring 26 goals for the club in his position as an inside forward. He left football at the age of 25 to focus on cricket.

In cricket, Barnard primarily played as a middle order batsman, and scored over 9,600 runs for the Hampshire Cricket Club. In 1961, he helped the team to win their first County Championship.

Barnard would later go on to coach cricket at the Warsash School of Navigation, and also worked as a radio presenter for BBC Radio Solent, as well as in hospital radios.
