Description
A stroll along the Esplanade by Clarence Parade Pier is a must-do activity if you visit Portsmouth.
The restaurants, cafés, and arcades you see today would not exist without the work of Jewish Alderman, Emanuel Emanuel. Wanting to attract tourists to Southsea, Emanuel transformed the area by building a pier and railway in from 1847-1848. While the railway line was disbanded in 1914, Clarence Pier is still a bustling part of the city, and a favourite spot for both tourists and locals to visit in the summer.

An 1889 edition of the Hampshire Post and Southsea Observer advertised 'A Grand Evening Promenade Concert in aid of the Restoration Fund of the Portsmouth Synagogue' to be held on Clarence Pier on 8 October 1889.

While Hampshire’s Jewish community had faced hostility from individuals and organisations seeking their conversion to Christianity, this event and its public appeal for donations demonstrate that many Hampshire residents supported their Jewish neighbours and their right to maintain a place of worship.
