Description

Housed in a Grade II listed building on Winchester's historic Jewry Street, The Arc hosts art exhibitions, live music and theatre productions, and classes.

In 2022, The Arc hosted an exhibition showcasing the rarely seen work of Jewish artist Marc Chagall. The artwork displayed in The Arc was a series of 50 black and white lithograph illustrations inspired by The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Anthea Gerrie wrote that Chagall identified with the character of Prospero, who was forced to flee from persecution in the play. The curator of the exhibition, Hanna Scolnikov, argues that the terrible storm featured in the play became symbolic of the storms in Chagall’s own life. The exhibition tied into Winchester’s wider efforts to emphasise its Jewish history and culture. While the exhibition is no longer running at The Arc, you can view some of Chagall’s illustrations on the exhibition page, or speak to the staff members for further information.
