Description
-
The Southampton Hebrew Congregation was founded as an independent Ashkenazi Orthodox community in 1833.
-
The community held religious and Hebrew classes for children from 1874 until the mid-twentieth century.
In 1964, the current synagogue opened on Mordaunt Road. The close-knit and friendly community meets for the major High Holidays, and some Shabbat services throughout the year. The synagogue was recently refurbished in 2024 to meet the needs of the growing community. For instance, the Jewish Society at the University of Southampton also uses the synagogue for holiday events including Purim and Hanukkah services, and recently held a Purim ball there.
