Description
The Parkes Institute is the oldest and most wide-ranging centre for Jewish/Non-Jewish relations in the world.
Staff members at the Institute have expertise ranging from Jews in antiquity to Judaism in modern day Europe. The Institute is named after Dr Reverend James Parkes (1896-1981), who fought tirelessly against antisemitism and helped to rescue Jewish refugees in the 1930s.

Students at the University of Southampton can select Parkes modules at undergraduate level, while Masters students can study MA Holocaust Studies: History, Experience, Heritage. There is also a thriving PhD community at Southampton, where researchers share their research and receive constructive feedback in doctoral seminars.

The Parkes Institute holds regular events and seminars on the subject of Jewish/Non-Jewish relations. Events since January 2025 have ranged from a screening of Oscar-winning film ‘A Real Pain’ followed by a Q&A session with academic experts, to seminars on The Jewish Eighteenth-Century, and British Jews since 1945. The majority of these events are free to attend, and are open to everybody.

To see future events, please follow the Parkes Institute on social media and Eventbrite.
