Description
-
Melchet Court is a country house in Romsey that was built in 1863.
-
A Grade II listed building, Melchet Court has undergone several reconstructions in its lifetime - rebuilt 1875-9 after a fire, and then further re-modelled in 1912-4. The manor was built in a neo-Elizabethan style, and the interiors were decorated with Italian influences.
Alfred Mond bought Melchet Court, Romsey, in 1911 from the Baring family. He was promoted to the peerage in 1928, and subsequently took the title Baron Melchett of Landford.Historian Tom Stammers has examined Mond’s lesser-known role as an art collector, arguing that the practice deepened Mond’s understanding of his own German-Jewish heritage. Many of these works, including paintings and sculptures, were displayed at Melchet Court.
Melchet Court is now used as a wedding and celebration venue. You can find out more about the venue on their website.
