Description
-
Jewry Street was a centre of the Jewish community in medieval Winchester.
-
Previously named Scowrtenestret, meaning Shoemaker’s Street, the road was known as Jewry Street by the thirteenth-century.
This location is also featured in the Medieval Jewish Trail walking tour, and is now home to a statue of Licoricia of Winchester (see this pin for more details). Members of the Southampton Jewish Society are pictured here on a trip to Winchester in 2022, to visit Jewry Street and other Jewish locations in Winchester.
