Description
Hawke Street was the home to Samuel Isaacs, a 19th century Jewish naval agent.
Naval agents specialised in logistical matters such as supplies, or acted as civilian contractors. Isaacs lived at number 11 from 1838-1839, and would have worked at the Portsmouth Dockyards.

Also resident on Hawke Street in the early 19th Century was the famed novelist Charles Dickens. See the pin ‘Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum’ for more details on Dickens and his relationship to Judaism.
