- From 1900, Jewish traders began to trade from small shops on Charlotte Street.

They were primarily Russian and Polish Jews, and contributed to the rich variety of wares along the bustling market street.
Around 1910, a Portsmouth Jewish Naturalisation Society had been founded, to help boost the level of integration and improve the English language skills of these migrants.
