Description
-
In 1855, Hampshire-native Lewis Aria donated £25,000 of a fortune he had amassed in Jamaica towards the establishment of a college for young men who wanted to train as Jewish ministers.
-
The college opened in 1874, and was open to Orthodox Jewish students. A second property in Victoria Road was purchased for the college in 1920, which contained its own synagogue.
As Tony Kushner has highlighted, men who trained at Aria College went on to work in South Africa, Jamaica and Australia, as well as in locations around Britain, demonstrating the international connections of Portsmouth’s Jewry.
The college closed in 1958, due to rising costs and reduced interest.
