Description
Known as ‘The Hut’, this military synagogue was consecrated in March 1912, and was the first garrison synagogue in Britain.
However, The Hampshire Post and Southsea Observer reported as far back as 1882 that ‘commanding officers should facilitate the attendance of Jewish soldiers' at Jewish services.

The site is also linked to the Jewish Soldiers Club, which had been founded by 1918.

After 1920, there were still occasional services at the synagogue, such as on the High Holy Days, however these were irregular and were phased out.
