Description
Local archives and history centres offer access to a wealth of resources that are invaluable for local research.
Portsmouth History Centre provides free access to the British Newspaper Archive (BNA), revealing stories about the lives and experiences of the local Jewish community.

For example, in 1934 the Portsmouth Evening News published an article entitled “The Nazis and the Jews”, which offers insight into contemporary perceptions of Jewish life in Nazi Germany prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.

More than fifty years later, in 1987, the same newspaper reported on Mr Jack Mack, a Portsmouth representative on the Board of Deputies of British Jews, who argued that publicising the names and crimes of Nazi war criminals constituted sufficient punishment.

These newspaper articles show how local archives can reveal both personal and communal histories, making them key resources for understanding Portsmouth’s Jewish heritage
