Description

In 1874, Frederick Elias Freilch, a Polish Jew working as a refreshment house-keeper in Butcher Street, was charged with neglecting to support his wife, Frances, and their daughter, Rachael.

The Hampshire Telegraph reported that many members of Portsmouth’s Jewish community attended the court session and expressed sympathy for Frances Freilch.
A witness further alleged that her sister, Miss Pearce, had eloped with Frederick and had reportedly borne his child. It was stated that Frederick had instructed Frances to continue running their business while he travelled, allegedly with Miss Pearce.
Frederick was returned to gaol and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. Miss Pearce was required to remain at the court for her own safety, due to the hostility of Frances’ friends.
